Una Caja Dove Shoot

HALO-Flight has over a three-million dollar operating budget. Maintenance of three aircraft, state-of-the-art medical equipment, and a full staff of highly trained pilots and medical crews are some of the costs that make up that budget.

HALO-Flight is a non-profit organization, but to continue operations it is imperative that our organization bills patients for their medical transports, seeks out donations and support from our community, and host fundraisers to help offset some of these expenses.

One of these fundraisers includes the Una Caja Dove Shoot held in the fall for the last four years. The event was held at the Caesar Kleberg Cowboy Camp in Bishop until last fall when it was held at Ms. Laura Berry’s Lonesome Dove Ranch near Old San Patricio.

The dove shoot is a unique event in that teams of five are required to use a .410 shotgun, use only one-box, ‘una caja’, of shells and wear a white cap during hunting activities. The 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd place teams are determined by the team with the most birds and fewest shells used.

The event never fails to entertain. Shooting time does not begin until 5:00 p.m. so hunters can participate in various activities from silent auctions and shooting games or taste the delicious food provided by various sponsors. Shooters especially enjoyed the Cajun boudin and fajitas last year.

This year’s event is present by CITGO and is scheduled to be held on October 10, 2012.
